Tape Measure

This weekend, I was at a BBQ but was getting ready to leave, and a couple of the guys (who mind you were both in relationships) came up to me and asked why I was leaving, and then height was brought up. The typical comments were made "wow, you are SO tall" "I feel normal sized talking to everyone else, but then I come and talk to you and I feel like a midget", "Did you ever play basketball?", etc. I stated that I was 6'1 and although clearly shorter than me, they too stated "No way!" And then they too claimed that they were 6'1. After some "back to back" chants, I was "measured" back-to-back against every guy at the party. Then... a new one... the tape measure was brought out to measure my height. Literally the tape measure was brought out! I can't recall this ever happening before... but never ceases to amaze me what people will ask and what extent they will go to... even at age 29! Will I be 80 and still get tape measured? I mean, no one offered to measure the thickness of people pot bellies... I should have suggested that as our next move. But yes, I measured at 6'1, exactly the height I claimed to be. All the guys measured out shorter than they claimed and shorter than me. I left the BBQ, hugged the boys and stated "maybe next year you can catch up, but I won't hold my breath" they laughed and I did too. I just sort of wish I had wore my 4 inch heals! And rocked it like a super model - make the shorties suffer a little bit more. :)

Miss USA 2010 Vegas - Top 5 Contestants

Watch the video below, or fast forward to 4:35, to catch the moment that fueled this blog. Clip taken from the Miss USA 2010 contest in Vegas, the top 5 contestants have just been selected, and watch the announcer as Miss Maine starts to answer the question.

All five of the contestants were asked a very simple question, which they had the opportunity to answer - well at least 4 of the 5 had an opportunity to answer. As Miss Maine approached the Hosts, Natalie Morales, asked Miss Maine her question, and right as Miss Maine was about to provide her answer, the male Host, Curtis Stone, falls to his knees, flings his head back gazing up at Miss Maine, all the meanwhile holding the microphone up to her mouth with his arm stretched up, as to imitate a much shorter version of himself. He pauses while looking out at the audience, which erupts in laughter, joining in on the laughter was the other host, Natalie Morales. Host Stone followed by standing up and saying "My God your so tall and geor.."(of course the mic broke out, just as he was about to say "gorgeous")Host Morales followed up by asking "yes, how tall are you? By the way..." I could not believe my eyes! I sat there jaw dropped.

Curtis Stone - that was such a dick move! {And shame on you Natalie Morales for going along with it!} Here these ladies are nervous as all hell, and you went out of your way to unfairly single out one of the contestants for her appearance, her height. What would you have done if an overweight contestant made her way over to you? You might have well, just told the judges straight out that she was WAY too tall to win this competition. After you made your little joke at Miss Maine's expense, she was the 1st one eliminated from the final 5... Not only did you ruin her chance at winning the competition, but just think about all the little girls out there watching this pageant, after that move you pulled, you sent the message that being tall is comedic and VERY unusual. Congratulations Mr. Stone for tainting the minds of billions of little girls watching the television that now fear being tall for ever having to face that very moment that Miss Maine had to endure. If you were any kind of man, you would issue her an apology. As for the rest of America...

Miss Maine - Bravo for being able to laugh it off. I mean, honestly, what else can you really do at that point?! Curtis clearly felt uncomfortable in his own skin and in the presence of your stature and beauty. AND... congratulations for making it into the top 5! How amazing are you! You are such an inspiration for tall women. Not only are you an accomplished athlete but a beauty queen to top it off! Guaranteed you will go on to do bigger and better things than all of the ladies you competed with, and you already have.
